Road Trip Wednesday: Sounds of Summer

Today, the Road Trip Wednesday crew over at YA Highway asks:

What music has been your summer soundtrack?

  • I would like to start this post by noting that anyone who doesn't include "Call Me Maybe" on their list is a dirty rotten liar; that song has been pretty much unavoidable and I can't help having it in my head at least 30% of the time.  Since I have seen a fair number of HONEST posters include this one today, I will include the Sesame Street version.

  • The other song I've found impossible to avoid, as I've been glued to the Olympics, is even more embarrassing.  Apparently it's by the appallingly named Phillip Phillips, of American Idol fame.  It's called "Home", and in the interest of not bringing down the infamous copyright wrath of the IOC, I'm just going to link to this EW article about how it's being used as the theme song of the US Women's Gymnastics team.
  • Annnnnnd then there are the songs associated with the TV we've been watching.  First of all, Mr. S and I have finally gotten around to Friday Night Lights, which isn't super musical, but does have a timeless refrain in "Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose."  Second of all, we have been watching Dawson's Creek, which I loved the first season of but never really watched thoroughly all the way through.  In a complete and utter travesty, the immortal theme song (Paula Cole's I Don't Wanna Wait) has been replaced on Netflix/DVDs by some other dopey song, the first line of which sounds a lot like "My heart is in my pants."  The real lyric is "my heart is in my hands" but I think my version might be more appropriate for the crew from the Creek, who are all either getting sexy with each other or obsessing over the fact that they aren't.  And third of all, I have been having a LOT of "Oh, THAT'S what that song is called?" moments while watching season two of The Glee Project, a reality show designed to cast a recurring character on Glee.

  1. Hahah, haven't seen the Sesame Street one yet! Though I have to say, I don't listen to radio and didn't download Call Me Maybe so except in the (awesome) parodies I don't really hear it.
My summer playlist has been more relaxed, with one favorite song whose lyrics were penned by a YA author :)

    1. I resisted it for so long but it was playing, like, in stores I went to, or when I'd be in a taxi, or pretty much ANYWHERE. Eventually, the song won :)

  2. Confession: I know of the "Call Me Maybe" song, but I don't know it well enough to be able to hear it in my head. If someone played it, I'd probably recognize it. My kids clearly aren't into it, otherwise I'd know it better than my own name! :)

My RTW today was a creative challenge since I don't really have a summer playlist. But I think I did okay with it. :)

    1. Oh man, you totally lucked out that your kids aren't into it! It is SO dumb. I mean, REALLY REALLY dumb. But after some mysterious number of listens, it just forcibly sets your brain to "LOVE" and there's no choice. (Except, I suppose, a few tough, differently-minded holdouts, who will go on a quest to save the rest of humanity when Carly Rae Jepsen has finally brainwashed us all and becomes the supreme leader of a pop-music dystopia. There's my Divergent, right there.)

  3. My princess is Call Me Maybe obsessed so i guess that's been in my head a fair bit revcently. Along with the Olympic picks, in particular the songs from the ads that get played over and over on our coverage here in australia.

    1. Yeah, there's a fair few ads here I can sing along to by now! It really feels like there's about half a dozen ads that take up 95% of the airtime during the Olympics here.

  4. Yeah, Call me Maybe made it onto my list. I blame it on the MC in my new WIP though. ;)

    1. Very convenient! (Look out though, you could have it in your head for a LONG time if your MC likes it!)

  5. I love the Call Me Maybe song. It has been completely unavoidable this summer.

    1. Sometimes it also transitions into Blondie's "Call Me" in my head. I cannot escape goofy pop songs. *Sigh*

  6. I saw that Cookie Monster spoof a couple weeks back and I thought it was pretty hilarious. :) And you're not alone just getting around to Friday Night Lights recently--same here! It's pretty good. :)

    1. FNL is kind of a slow build--I knew I'd like it, but it took a while before I got hooked. (I felt that way with Parenthood, too, which is by the same people.) But now I'm definitely all in and it's totally possible that we will finish the rest before we move (it's been in rotation as a show to watch while packing: I make a giant heap of things on the living room floor, and pack in front of the TV. It's so the way to go.)

  7. I've been getting really into reggaeton this summer, thanks to Pandora and trying to listen to as much Spanish-language material as possible. It's also had the unintended side effect of making me feel more at home here -- as I got more into it, I realized that it's what I often hear obnoxiously blasting from people's cars at midnight at the gas station below my apartment!

Also: how in the heck did they think they could replace "I Don't Wanna Wait"?!

    1. It's a travesty.

I realize that my taste in music is nearly 100% situational, which means that I have a WEIRD collection. I haven't, like, consciously selected my music in years. I'm looking forward to building some writing/cleaning/cooking playlists for my upcoming year of whatever-it-is that I'm doing.
