What's Up Wednesday: Back to Work Edition!

What's Up Wednesday is a meme started by Jaime Morrow and Erin Funk to bring reading and writing bloggers together once a week. Go to Jaime's blog to add your link and check out posts from other writers!

What I'm Reading

I'm still beta-ing, but mostly right now I'm reading the textbook I'll be using this year in my American History class!  It's consuming pretty much all of my time but I'm also getting really into it.

What I'm Writing

Little did I know how much time this textbook project would take up...so my goal for this week is to write every day, even if it's just a hundred words or so.  As school approaches, I have to give priority to my teaching jobs, so just keeping the writing habit alive is challenge enough.

What Else I've Been Up To

This weekend was the first one in a long time that Mr. S and I were just at home, with no travel plans and no big family plans.  As fun as travel and family are, it was nice to just have two days to ourselves.  We drove around listening to podcasts for part of it: our long-time favorite Pop Culture Happy Hour, and the recently-popular-on-Tumblr Welcome to Nightvale
What Inspires Me Right Now
Taking a day off!  Yesterday, I woke up a giant ball of stress.  Work stuff is already piling up, and my road test is a week from Friday.  I had a driving lesson around noon, so I spent the whole morning messing around online and worrying.  The lesson went ok-not-great (it had been a while, so I had gotten used to our car, not the car I do lessons in--which will also be the car I take my road test in--and it took some time to get it back) and when I came home, I decided: I was calling a "sick day."  I made myself some soup and tea, and curled up on the couch to watch Little Women.  Mission: Chill Out went nicely, and I'm feeling energized and excited about working again.

I apologize in advance as well as retroactive to last week for not posting, commenting, or responding to comments as much as I normally do--I may try to keep up with WuW check-ins, but until school is clicking along, I'm going to be online a lot less than usual.  I'm hoping things get back to normal by the end of September!

What's up with you?

  1. Good luck with the new school year! As soon as I saw you were teaching History, I thought about the movie the husband and I watched last night - Argo. Have you seen it?! SO incredible I've watched it twice now.

Also, I totally understand the blogging departure - that was me the past two years! I hope you have a less stressful week!

  2. Best of luck with your road test -- I imagine that's very stress-inducing! Good for you for taking a break from it all. I think a goal of just writing every day, no matter how much or how little, is excellent, especially during busy "real life" times. Best of luck with it, Jess!

  3. Sorry to hear that yesterday was so stressful for you, Jess. :-( I'm glad that we're able to set writing aside for a little bit just to catch our breath. Take all the time you need before sending me more stuff. I know we'll both get back to it, so no worries there. I have to say, curling up on the couch to watch Little Women sounds like a good way to restore some calm. I'm going to do that soon with North & South (once I finish the book). I'm happy you got to spend some time with just your hubby. That simple stuff together, just relaxing and kicking back is so important and so fun. Hope you have a great week, Jess! Let me know if you need to bounce anything off of me (school-related stuff included). :-)

  5. I intend to follow your example and engage in Mission:Chill Out soon ^_^

Oooh, American History! I loved studying that. I love me some Cold War paranoia!

Have a wonderful week! A little every day is still progress :D

  6. I have a fondness for LIttle Women (the Winona Ryder one). It's a little hammy but I still lerrrrve it. Agree with the others, even if writing is set aside for awhile, take care of yourself.

  7. A 'sick day' sounds perfect, especially with all the stress coming up for you! I think it's amazing when people with actual full-time jobs manage to do any kind of writing, let alone blogging and all the rest, so whatever words you manage to get down, I think you'll be doing an awesome job :)

  8. Watching Little Women with some soup and tea sounds like the perfect cure for stress. I'm so sorry to hear you're feeling overloaded lately, but impressed that you're still plugging away at your WIP. Writing a little every day is great goal, especially when things get busy and you're not sure how much creative time you'll be able to squeeze in. Best of luck with your textbook project and the driving test. I hope you're able to relax a bit more this week, especially with Mr. S!

  9. It's nice to give yourself a day off every once in awhile, isn't it? Don't forget to give yourself some little breaks as school approaches and you get busier!

  10. Summers are so crazy, eh? They totally throw the routine off.

Goodness I would love to take a day off too, but it's time to get the game plan together for another school year (we home school) and whew! So much to do.
